The 10km sponsored walk tomorrow (Wednesday 24 September), is being led by Lord Justice Males and Lord Justice Newey.
It will see representatives from local law firm, barristers’ chambers, in-house legal departments and university law groups stepping out to raise vital funds for the provision of free legal advice in Tunbridge Wells, with 100% of the funds raised going directly to Citizens Advice in North and West Kent.
TeamCB is represented this year by: John Spence, Victoria Sampson, Oliver Bussell, Peggy Hendley, Gemma Gillespie and Stanley the Dog.
At the end of 2024, seven million households (60% of all those on low incomes) were going without the essential goods they had in the previous six months, including 5.4 million experiencing food insecurity in the previous 30 days. Further, 4.3 million households (37% of all those on low incomes) were in arrears on at least one household bill or credit commitment.
The money raised by the Legal Walk is essential to supporting local advice charities, so that they can continue providing their life-changing free legal advice services to people like Ben.
Ben, a young man with a learning disability, was devastated after losing his mother. Struggling to cope alone, he faced the looming threat of losing his lifelong home due to unpaid rent. Overwhelmed and desperate, Ben turned to his Citizens Advice for help.
The adviser provided reassurance and helped Ben reapply for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which had previously been denied. The successful claim gave Ben vital financial stability. They also liaised with the property management company, securing a home that was both affordable and suitable. With newfound security, Ben could grieve and embrace independent living, free from anxiety.
“The Tunbridge Wells Legal Walk always provides a great way to meet up with others in our legal community, while raising money for Citizens Advice, which provides vital support to so many,” says John Spence, Partner at CooperBurnett LLP and former President of the Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & District Law Society.
